Short Inca Trail  to Machu Picchu starts at Km 104 (104 kilometer along the railway from Cusco to Machu Picchu) located at 2,100 masl at the place named Chachabamba. It’s 13 km of distance that can be covered in 6 -7 hour trek. This trek is perfect for people who don’t want to spend much time in the mountains but still want to feel the charm of the energetic mountains and the cloud forest.

The Short Inca Trail is considered one of the most scenic short distance treks in Peru. Running along the border with the Amazon Jungle, the trek offers amazing views of some of the most pristine and unspoiled landscapes in Peru.


Day 1: Aguas Calientes

Board the morning train to Chachabamba or km 104 and hike 13 km through staining mountain scenery.

Day 2:  Machu Picchu

Full-day will be dedicated to explore Machu Picchu; your guide will explain you all about Machu Picchu; in the afternoon, you will return to Cusco.

The Short Inca Trail  starts from Chachabamba; the trail continues uphill to Wiñaywayna: an important Inca complex, four hours approximately; where you will appreciate Farming terraces ” Andenes ” surrounding the whole side of a mountain decorating this ancient Inca castle with temples, buildings and water channels. The stonework is high in quality and fine masonry with a magnificent sequence of fifteen ritual fountain baths.

From Wiñaywayna the trail continues surrounding the Mountain to Intipunku through the Cloud forest with the presents of beautiful nature, sounds of hummingbirds, peacefully and uncrowned trail one hour and half and the continue down to Machu Picchu and board the bus to the town of “Aguas Calientes”. We’ll spend the night in a comfortable Hotel. Next morning early, we’ll return to Machu Picchu by bus for a guided tour, visit and explore with our expert guide, avoiding the large crowds that arrive with the first trains from Cusco. In the afternoon, you’ll return to Cusco by train.

Day 1
Cusco - Ollantaytambo - Chachabamba - Wiñayhuayna - "Aguas Calientes"

The 2 day-Inca Trail Machu Picchu begins once we pick you up from your hotel and drive to Ollantaytambo train station to board the train that will take us to Chachabamba or km 104 (104 kilometer along the railway from Cusco to Machu Picchu); we commence the trek at Cahchabamba; after we pass the control point we’ll trek up to the archaeological complex of Wiñayhuayna (2,650 masl). This is an impressive complex made up of an agricultural center with numerous terraces, a religious sector and an urban sector.

On the way up, we may enjoy magnificent views of the Urubamba River. From Wiñayhuayna, we’ll continue the trek up to Intipunku or the Sun Gate. Trekking through the stunning cloud forest; from Intipunku, we can enjoy the sunset at Machu Picchu and surrounding mountains. From Intipunku, we’ll descend 45 minutes to Machu Picchu and take bus to the town of “Aguas Calientes” where you will have hotel accommodation.

Day 2
"Aguas Calientes" – Machu Picchu - Cusco

We’ll wake up early and board a bus up to Machu Picchu where we begin a complete guided tour of the Inca Citadel that will take approximately two hours. Then, you will have free time to walk around or climb up the Huayna Picchu Mountain, where one can experience spectacular views of all of Machu Picchu, (please note that there are only 400 visitors allowed per day divided in two turns) or visit the Temple of the Moon or the Inca Bridge. In the afternoon, we’ll meet in the town of Aguas Calientes where you can enjoy your lunch before we take the train back to Cusco at 04:30 p.m approximately and arrive to Cusco after nightfall.

Machu Picchu is located at 112 kilometers at northeast of the city of Cusco, it’s situated at 2,400 masl. The Spanish Conquistadores never saw Machu Picchu and consequently never wrote about it. A few other outsiders had seen it in the years before Bingham, but he was the one who revealed it to the world at large and it made him famous.

  • Insect repellent for mosquitoes(Malaria or Yellow fever not been reported)
  • Comfortable hiking boots.
  • Money in soles or dollars. ATM’s or cash machines and travelers cheques in “Aguas Calientes” are more expensive to change.
