The Scenic Salkantay Trekking & Expedition will start from the city of Cusco; after driving a car for four hours we’ll arrive to Soraypampa zone and begin the lifetime trek to Machu Picchu.


Four-day Scenic Salkantay Trekking & Expedition stretches across the Mountain Range of Vilcabamba and includes very steep accent to Salkantay Pass (4,600 masl); followed by sharp descends through the old moraine. The trail offers rewarding snow-covered peaks and glacial valley. Salkantay or Salcantay (6,271 masl/20,568 ft); is a wonderful snow Mountain located less than fifty miles northwest of the city of Cusco; in southern site of Peru.

The Scenic Salkantay Trekking & Expedition takes you in the shadows of this impressive snow mountain; interacting with its inhabitants and exploring its forgotten Inka ruins. You’ll arrive to the town of Santa Teresa (the backdoor of Machu Picchu); where you can enjoy the natural hot springs and relax your exhausted muscles. After that, we’ll continue trekking through the Urubamba Valley until the town of “Aguas Calientes”; where you’ll have accommodation in the hotel. The last day early in the morning, take the bus for 25 minutes up to Machu Picchu and explore it with our expert guide.


Day 1: Drive a car for 3:30 hours and Trek to Huayrocmachay camp

Early (4:30am), we’ll travel in our bus to Mollepata; where we can purchase some item for the trek; then we continue to Soraypampa starting point of the trek. Today is the hardest day because we’ll pass over 4,600 masl (the Salkantay Pass).

Day 2: Trek to Playa Sawayaco

We´ll Continue descent into the cloud forest with the presence of great variety of vegetation; and great wildlife; also we´ll see the local inhabitants and their farms.

Day 3: Trek to Aguas Calientes town and acommodation in the hotel

Hike through tropical and subtropical plantations until Hydroelectric zone; in the afternoon, we’ll continue through Urubamba Valley until the town of “Aguas Calientes”; here you’ll have accommodation in the hotel.

Day 4: Today we’ll explore Machu Picchu

Full-day will be dedicated to explore the stunning Machu Picchu; in the afternoon, you will return by train to Ollantaytambo train station; and you’ll be transferred to your hotel.

Day 1
Cusco - Mollepata – Soraypampa – Huyrocmachay

Day’s Highlights: Walking from Soraypampa at 3,800m toward the highest pass at 4,600m; enjoy the views of Umantay and Salkantay Mountain; walk down to our exclusive campsite at Huayrocmachay. Today you’ll have Lots of photo opportunity.

Begins at 04:30 am once we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and travel in our private car to the zone of Soraypampa (3,800 masl). We will stop for breakfast in the village of Mollepata; here you also can purchase some items for the trek. From Mollepata, we’ll continue driving one more hour until the zone of Soraypampa (3,800 masl); where we will meet our “Arrieros” or “Horsemen” and trekking staff (Chef and Assistants). We start trekking with a gradual climb for about two hours trough a pristine Andean Valley until Salkantay Pampa; Here is the bottom of the Salkantay Mountain; we’ll rest for about 20 minutes and take some pictures of the Mountain. Then we’ll continue zigzag up to Suyruccocha where the lunch will be served.

After lunch, we’ll continue 45 minutes up to Salkantay Pass (4,600 masl); From this point, we can enjoy spectacular views of Cusco’s second highest peak; the stunning snow capped Mountain of Salkantay (6,271 masl) and Humantay (6,100masl). At this point there is an Apacheta (offering place) where you´ll leave a piece of rock carried from the bottom or some coca leaves as a present for the mountain spirits (The great APU). After that, we’ll continue two hours downhill trough old moraine to Huayrocmachay camp.

Day 2
Trek from Huarocmachay camp to Playa Sawayaco

Second day’s Highlights: Trekking downwards; enjoy the pristine forest small villages, local farms and wonderful wildlife in their natural habitat. Different types of birds and hummingbirds, flowers and orchids are some of the highlights of today.

An early breakfast and continue the second day of our Scenic Salkantay Trekking & Expedition. From Huayrocmachay camp will take us two hours and half approximately to the community of Collpapampa from where we’ll continue parallel to the Santa Teresa River observing Large quantity of wildlfe like: different types of birds, hummingbirds, possible mountain spectacle bears, deer and more.

We also will see a sub-tropical vegetation; flowers and orchids, cornfields, fruit fields and we will have the opportunity to see a beautiful waterfall. Our lunch will be served at Wiñaypocco zone and in the afternoon, we’ll follow a gentle descent through fully vegetated valley to the small high jungle village known as “La Playa” at 2,300 masl; where we will setup your camp. Here, the guide will resolve to camp here or continue to the town of Santa Teresa where you can enjoy the natural hot spring; entrance to the hot springs and the public transport are not included (25 soles or US$ 10).

Day 3
Walk from La Playa Sawayaco to Aguas Calientes town

Third day’s Highlights: Walk over the Llactapata pass; the viewpoint of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu Mountain, Outstanding views of the Urubamba canyon, Explore the Inca ruins of “Inti Watana”; Lots of photo opportunity; hotel accommodation in the town of Aguas Calientes.

From Playa Sawayaco we walk 40 minutes to Lucmabamba village from where we’ll start accent through coffee, banana and passion fruit plantations and a lovely view of the Santa Teresa River/Valley; after climbing for 3 hours, we will arrive to the pass of Llaqtapata (2,700 masl) we can enjoy some free time to rest and observe the mountain of Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu and the Urubamba canyon; at this place, there are Inca ruins still covered by thick vegetation.

After we rest in the viewpoint of Llactapata, we’ll continue for two hours down to the hydroelectric zone; where we will have lunch and say goodbye to our staff. In the afternoon, we’ll continue trekking through the picturesque Urubamba Valley for two hours until the town of “Aguas Calientes” where you’ll have accommodation in the hotel.

Day 4
"Aguas Calientes" - Machu Picchu - Cusco

Fourth day’s Highlights: See the sunrise over Machu Picchu (If weather permits); Explore the iconic Machu Picchu with our professional tour guide; Enjoy free time within Machu Picchu for further exploration; optionally you can climb up to the mountain of Huayna Picchu for fantastic views of Machu Picchu

Today you’ll get up early breakfast and leave your luggage in the storage of the hotel, then we’ll take an early bus and enjoy the beauty and magic of Machu Picchu; after the 2:30 hour-tour you will have free time to walk around, climb up the Wayna Picchu Mountain (see available space- entrance are not included US$30) from where you can experience spectacular views or you can visit the Temple of the Moon.

In the afternoon, we will meet at the town of “Aguas Calientes” for lunch and then ride the train and return to Ollantaytambo train station; from where you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Cusco.

  • MEALS: Lunch in the town of "Aguas Calientes" on the final day, you must consider a bugged of US$ 15 to 20 in average restaurant.
  • Entrance to the thermal baths in "Aguas Calientes" (optional) US$ 3.
  • Tips for the staff. Tipping is expected but it is not mandatory.
